"That was not a cue, that was a cutoff - that was the exact OPPOSITE of a cue! You could not be MORE wrong!"
As an aside about last night, I find it deeply, deeply amusing that YouTube recordings of "The Captain's Wife's Lament" nowadays have to be split across two clips because of the time limitations YT imposes.

"'Urine on a Saturday Night' is our GWAR tribute band."
(Or "Oh, they have to do it - if you don't, they'll think you didn't enjoy the show...")

"Your move, Chapman Stick enthusiasts."
Huh. Turns out that if you're recording audio to a hard-disk based iPod for several hours, it'll deplete the battery fairly quickly. Who knew?

Anyways, had an awesome night. Paul and Storm and Jonathan Coulton put on a fine show, as always, and the hall was just a GOOD space to hear them - the acoustics were so good that they killed the mikes and amp for "Always the Moon" and sang it unamplified into the room, and you could hear a pin drop it was so clear. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.

Then, a dick joke. 'Cause THAT'S the way they roll.

P&S were a blast, and the Spouse threw panties at them for Opening Band, which was of course awesome. And of course my video of this didn't save. But I can vouch for the awesome. And "The Captain's Wife's Lament" ran for 12 minutes 45 seconds, mostly because we managed to completely piss off Paul with ARRR!-related interjections.

We didn't get my request for "The Saturday Boy", but Paul had a melodica for "Istanbul Not Constantinople" which came out great. (I wish I could see one of the Flood shows sometime.)

Sadly, my recordings of the show came out kind of below-par, so I'll only have some very, very edited highlights.

All in all, great show, and I hope they come back soon.

(If I remember other details later on, I'll try and get them up.)

Is it wrong of me to enjoy Alejandro Escovedo's covers of "I Wanna Be Your Dog" more than the original?
(Also, the Uncle Tupelo demo cover is just SWEET.)

I'm still sick so I'm over-reacting to this because of my urkitude, I know, but :

HOLY CRAP I HAVE TO GO SEE THAT. I MEAN, "HEADHUNTER" AND EVERYTHING, IN ADDITION TO HERSCHEL.

Seriously, that's a hell of a double-bill. Bonus points if Roky shows up.

I was feeling kinda ethereal...
Why am I as derisive as I am of the Half-A-Who of Daltrey and Townsend, but the Half-A-Pretenders that was Learning to Crawl gets my praises and tears? I mean, "Middle of the Road" is GOOD, but it's not ... okay, yeah, it is. But STILL...

(And as for the connection, the track below? Produced by Basher.)

I'm on a Stiff bender tonight, which I suppose would mean "I'm drinking for Nick Lowe".
(I'm also FIRMLY convinced that there are not nearly enough covers of "Be Stiff" available to me.)

A couple of y'all, obviously, totally knew this was coming. I was hoping, but once [info]omorka confirmed it, I immediately bought my Owlcon ticket based on this :

Heroes of the New Wave III - Save a Prayer

Awesome, awesome, awesome.

(Also, [info]b3zsgirl, no "well, evidently I was wrong - it seems that you CAN get arrested in this town." this year? I was looking forward to hearing stories about that one!)

(I might also watch the Lucha Libre Hero session - I can't hold up my end of that kind of character for long enough (not that I'm the greatest roleplayer in general), but once again it sounds pretty great.)

I wanted to extend the gag, but really, there's just not much to the original song...
Okay, just got the Coulton tickets - since this is not a Ticketmaster (ptui!) venue, no service charge, it turns out! They were $28.00 each, which while higher than normal, with the lack of convenience fee is about the same as the HoB show ended up being...

We have tickets for :

"And everything will be outta sight, when Johnny sings funny at the Coulton show tonight."
Okay, as some of you might have heard, I kind of failed at ... well, just about everything that wasn't weird fever dreams ... yesterday.
So I'll be getting tickets for the Coulton show sometime in the next couple of days.

So, I was at Jason's Deli waiting for my takeout, and I thought the song sounded familiar. I suddenly realized that it was "The Loved Ones" by Elvis Costello off of IbMePdErRoIoAmL. The idea that a deep album track from one of his less-popular albums (it might be a critic's darling, but it's not like the video for "You Little Fool" gets big notice on YouTube these days) struck me as curious - I mean, I certainly liked it and all, and it's making me listen to the album for the first time in a little while, but it's still kind of an odd occurrence...

But let me add in Jay Smooth's "In Defense of Humbug" for those who might want different affirmations :

Went to DeFalco's last week to get the CO2 tank refilled after my discovery at Thanksgiving, and yesterday went to pick it up. While I was there, I got a bottle of Zatarain's root beer extract to experiment with. (The last time I tried root beer was the initial experiment in 2005.)This one had measurements for quart recipes, so I went ahead and tried mixing one up this evening - mixed it up, force carbonated it (because I have no patience, and since I have the CO2 freshened up...), then put in in the fridge until a couple of minutes ago.

Wow. It's like drinking one of those A&W barrel candies, only a little better. It's not a BAD drink, by any stretch, and I intend to do more with this - but sakes alive, I am gonna monkey with this recipe a bit. It's ... inoffensive. As I told the Spouse a few minutes ago, I foresee vanilla in its future.

Also, it's nice to say again, "I made that."

Pedipus Interruptus
So tonight's show was pretty darn fine, but it got cut off somewhat short before they intended it to.
(On the other hand, I think we'd have only had something like two more songs anyways - it's not like we can do an entire set's worth of songs there...)

I got the iPhone out to record the set after the first song, which is kind of sad - sad, at least, that I didn't get it prepped beforehand and so I missed a REALLY great version of Dagberto. Really, the band was just together all round - Beans, Jimb, Susan, [info]bassfingers and [info]omorka all sounded good, and they were really tight tonight.
In any case, here's the tracks from the evening - they're mono mp3 tracks, on account of my forgetting the Mikey for the iPhone. (I have to say, though, that the iPhone is GREAT for recording shows, even if it's only mono without the Mikey - this is a pretty sweet recorder.) I'm hoping to try and get video for these sometime, but I don't know how yet - if I try and attach a camera to my head (a la these), anyone who watches it will get motion-sick EXTREMELY fast. (Imagine Blair Witch-like video shot by a dancer at a rave. Kinda like that.)

In any case, I reiterate : January 23rd at Dan Electro's. (And First Saturday, although he might put that one on hold since it's going to be January 2nd - I'll keep you posted.)

And another thing held over from last month :
Tortuga Mundo Tortuga Mundo
So, at the last First Saturday, I'd asked Beans about the price on this one. He proceeds to take the thing off the wall and tell me that it's my Christmas bonus.
So, um, yeah. Needless to say, I had no idea how to respond to that one, aside from a sputtered "Thank you".
